|
Prabhosa is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It lies at a distance of approximately one kilometer from the district of Kaushambi in India. In the ancient times, this place was known as Mankula. The significance of Prabhosa is that it served as the venue of the 6th rain retreat of Lord Buddha. However, it could not have the fortuity of receiving religious sermons by Buddha. Prabhosa boasts of a number of caves and rock shelters. The largest cave is known as Sita's Window. It is believed that Buddha stayed in this cave only, when he visited Prabhosa.
Hieun Tsang, the famous Chinese traveler, also visited this place in the 7th century AD. In the account of his travels in India, Hieun Tsang has even made a reference about a stupa being constructed there, by Emperor Ashoka. However, presently no Buddhist antiquities are housed here.
